Kenya’s Tech Boom

Mobile phone technology is one of the fastest growing drivers of the Kenyan economy. In January 2015, I went to the capital Nairobi to find out more.

I found out that Kenyans use mobile phones in more advanced ways than many in the West. For example, people use them to pay the rent, to pay for parking, and also use them as a bank. Kenya is a world leader in mobile banking.

The fast development of mobile phone technology has spawned a vibrant start-up scene. With the film crew, we visited one of the biggest business incubators, 88mp. We also featured a startup company called Sematime, that offers a platform for schools to electronically send exam results to parents with mobile phones.

Kenya’s ambitious goal is to become a leading global IT hub. Soon, Africa will have more than a billion mobile phone users, so the potential is huge.
